The Making of Lab Created Diamonds – Everything You Need to Know

If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it is, of course, a duck. Indeed, it takes billions of years to form a diamond in its true form in nature. But since time immemorial, whenever science has been merged with nature, various wonders have happened. Lab grown diamond is one such miraculous wonder that has been made possible by the science. 2018 has been a landmark year when lab grown diamonds have been accepted widely. According to MVI Marketing’s Report, lab grown polished diamonds have witnessed an upward trajectory in the previous year and its acceptance will continue to grow.

What flourishes under pressure is a sure-shot diamond. There is no doubt in the fact that lab grown diamonds are real diamonds. In fact, lab grown diamonds are a new way people adapt beauty and sophistication in their jewelry. In addition to oozing elegance, lab grown diamonds are also environment-friendly which make it a preferable choice. With evolution, manufacturing lab grown diamonds are becoming quite economical compared to extracting the diamonds from nature. Owing to this fact, the number of lab grown diamond companies in the market have been increasing.

With so many advantages, you might be curious about the development process of lab grown diamonds. Let us briefly and quickly get down to understand how diamonds are grown in lab to get your queries sorted.

The Making

Lab grown diamonds are chiefly made from highly organized carbon. These sophisticated crystals are created by applying heat and pressure to the diamond seed. An artificial chamber is created in the lab which replicates the natural conditions that are present inside the earth’s surface. In this chamber, the diamond takes around 6 – 8 weeks to form. The grown diamond is then cut, polished, and graded and you will have finished crystal clear diamond in hand over which you cannot stop obsessing.

Methods for Diamond Synthesis

Basically, there are two methods used to synthesize diamonds in the lab which are used by all the lab grown diamond manufacturers – HPHT and CVD.

HPHT

This is a traditional or an older method for growing diamonds in the lab. In High Pressure High Heat process, molten flux is applied to the diamond seed crystal by putting it in a small capsule. Next, as the name suggests, high pressure and high heat is applied to the capsule and eventually the diamond begins to grow from the seed.

CVD

CVD known as Chemical Vapor Deposition is the modern method for synthesizing diamonds in the lab. In this process, the growth of diamond takes place in a vacuum chamber that is filled with carbon-rich gases, usually methane. The gas cloud is riddled with carbon and shot with a high-power microwave beam. Owing to the condition created, the diamond seed crystal starts to form eventually on the plate.
